Birmingham was founded in 1871 where the north-south rail line intersected the east-west rail line, the current site of Sloss Furnaces. We began at a “crossroads” and find ourselves at a “crossroads” once again. During Reconstruction after the Civil War people flocked to our great city because of the black coal, red iron ore, and white limestone found in our soil and her population grew like “magic”, hence, the “Magic City”. As fire removed the impurities from these combined ingredients and steel was the result, we as “black, red, white, and yellow” have gone through the fire together and have come out as one, strong, united city. It’s time to grow like never before! Birmingham was once known as the city of hopes and dreams where people all over the Southeast could rebuild their lives. From its miraculous birth out of the Civil War to its triumphant fight during the Civil Rights Movement, Birmingham has always been a city of dreamers! United citizens of Birmingham, IT’S TIME TO AWAKEN THE DREAM!
“Let your voice, the voice of a dreamer, be heard in your city!"
