Jody, a son of Birmingham, was born at the former Montclair Hospital in Jefferson County in August of 1970, and has lived here his entire life. He is a product of the Birmingham City school system, having graduated with honors from Huffman High School in 1988 and the University of Alabama at Birmingham with a business management degree in 1995. His business experience at companies like United Parcel Service and Liberty National Life Insurance along with his management educational background are just one reason he is qualified to be mayor of Birmingham, part of whose job description includes being the “head of the administrative branch of the city government,” according to the Mayor-Council Act, the governing document of our city.
Jody also believes in remembering, giving back and serving this great city he calls home. After graduating from UAB, he returned to his high school alma mater where he coached football, taught physical education and health, served as a teacher’s aide in a multi-handicapped classroom, PTSA President for three years, and the creator and instructor for a character education program called Passion For Purpose which leads principals, teachers, and students to discover their identity and destiny in life. His non-profit, Joshua Generation, Inc., was founded in 2003 to facilitate the character education program. Jody also taught K5-8th grade at a private school in Birmingham and currently serves as the president of the board of directors for SAFE Place, Inc., a Sex and Family Education abstinence organization that talks with approximately 10,000 students each year in the Birmingham area about the importance of purity before marriage.
Jody had the privilege of serving as the executive director for an Alabama organization promoting the Sanctity of Marriage Amendment Act, a measure the people of Alabama passed 81% to 19% in 2006. He understands the importance of family values and is a proven protector of the institution of marriage, the backbone of our communities. His additional governmental experience in a state senate race and two gubernatorial races have helped prepare him for his candidacy for mayor.
Jody understands servanthood is the key to influence and leadership. After receiving and accepting the call to ministry in 1994, Jody has served faithfully in three Birmingham area churches. Jody has worked primarily with students of all ages the last 15 years in Birmingham, but also realizes the importance of and yielded much of his efforts to empowering the parents, teachers, pastors and community leaders that are so vital in a child’s overall development. Jody is a credentialed minister in the State of Alabama, but he does not wear his religion on his sleeve. He believes a true leader simply attempts wholeheartedly to display the characteristics of a life that is in right relationship with Jesus Christ. He presently serves as the administrator and youth pastor for Point of Grace Ministries in Birmingham.
